Legacy Library lets families photograph physical books they already own, record a loved one's voice reading each page, and build a personal reading library their child can return to anytime.
It's designed for moments when the people a child loves can't always be there -- grandparents who live far away, deployed parents, or anyone who wants to read bedtime stories in their own voice.
Legacy Library is currently available for Android phones and tablets running Android 7.0 and up. It works best on tablets, but phone support is fully included.
iOS support is planned for a future release.
Yes. Legacy Library collects no personal data, shows no ads, has no social features, and does not connect to the internet during normal use. Everything -- photos, recordings, and settings -- stays on your device.
All parent controls (settings, adding books, recording) are protected by a math gate that children cannot solve without help.
Legacy Library is free to download and includes one built-in illustrated book plus the ability to add up to 2 books of your own -- no time limit, no credit card required.
The Full plan unlocks unlimited books and is available as a subscription:
- Monthly: $4.99/month
- Annual: $34.99/year (about 42% savings)
Subscriptions are managed through Google Play and can be cancelled anytime.
Legacy Library is designed for books you already own. Photograph the pages of physical books from your personal collection -- picture books, board books, early readers, anything your child loves.
From the Parent Dashboard, go to the Library tab and tap Add a Book. For each page, you can either take a new photo with your camera or choose an existing photo from your device's photo library.
After each photo, you'll see a crop and rotate tool to straighten the image before saving it to your book.
On the free tier, you can add up to 2 books of your own in addition to the one included book. Upgrading to the Full plan removes this limit entirely.
After adding a book, tap Record Now to go to the recording screen. Select or create a narrator profile, then tap the microphone button to start recording. Tap it again to stop.
Each page gets its own recording. Your child hears one page at a time as they read. After recording a page, you can play it back before moving on -- if you're not happy with it, just record again.
No. While we encourage loved ones to record themselves reading, capturing the pages alone still works as a usable ebook your child can tap through on their own. Audio can always be added later -- from the Parent Dashboard, open the Library tab, select the book, and tap Record Audio to pick up whenever you're ready.
No problem. When finishing a book, choose Record Later instead of recording immediately. The book will still appear in your Library tab and on your child's bookshelf -- it just won't have audio yet.
When you're ready, go to the Parent Dashboard, open the Library tab, select the book, and tap Record Audio to pick up where you left off.
Yes, anytime. When on the recording screen, you can play back the audio for any page before moving on. If you want to redo it, tap the microphone to record again -- the new recording replaces the old one.
You can also return to any finished book from the Library tab and re-record individual pages at any time.
Yes. From the Parent Dashboard Library tab, select the book and tap Edit. From there you can replace a page image with a new photo, rotate an existing image, or re-record the audio for any page. Tap Save when you're done to apply your changes.
From the bookshelf, your child taps a book cover to open it. They can tap the arrow buttons to move forward and back through pages, or turn on autoplay to let the pages advance automatically after each recording finishes.
The screen stays on while reading so the book doesn't go dark mid-story.
Day mode uses a light sky background -- great for daytime reading. Night mode switches to a dark starfield background -- easier on the eyes at bedtime. Toggle between them using the moon/sun icon on the bookshelf.
Tap the gear icon in the bottom-right corner of the bookshelf. You'll be shown a math question -- solve it to enter the Parent Dashboard. This keeps the settings and controls out of reach for young children.
The dashboard has three tabs: Library, History, and Settings.
The Library tab shows all your books and lets you manage them. From here you can:
- Add a Book -- photograph pages from a physical book to add it to the shelf
- Import -- add a .llbook file shared by another device
- Preview -- view a book as your child sees it
- Record Audio -- record or re-record narration for a book
- Edit -- replace or rotate page images, or re-record audio for individual pages
- Hide -- remove a book from the child's shelf without deleting it
- Export -- share a book as a file to another device
- Delete -- permanently remove a book
You can also sort the library by Alphabetical, Popularity, or Custom order.
The History tab shows a log of your child's recent reading activity -- which books they've opened, when they read them, and how long each session lasted. It's a simple way to see what your child has been enjoying.
To clear the reading history, scroll to the bottom of the History tab and tap Clear History, then confirm by tapping Clear All when prompted.
The Settings tab lets you manage:
- Child's Name -- personalizes the bookshelf header
- Narrators -- add, edit, or remove narrator profiles for family members
- Screen Time Limits -- set a daily reading time limit and approved reading hours
- Current Plan -- view your subscription status or upgrade to the Full plan
The Support section includes:
- Help Center -- opens the Legacy Library Help Center in your browser
- Rate this app -- opens the Legacy Library listing on Google Play so you can leave a rating
- Send feedback -- opens your email app with a new message to our support address
- Share the app -- opens your device's share sheet so you can send someone a link to the app
- App Version -- displays the current installed version of the app
Yes. From the Parent Dashboard, go to the Settings tab. You can set a daily reading time limit and specify approved reading hours. When the limit is reached, the app lets your child know it's time to stop for the day.
From the Parent Dashboard, go to the Settings tab. Enter your child's name in the Child's Name field. The bookshelf will display it as "[Name's] Legacy Library."
Yes. From the Parent Dashboard Library tab, tap a book and select Export. This creates a .llbook file containing the pages and all recordings. Share it via email, messaging, or any other app -- the recipient can then import it on their own device.
From the Parent Dashboard Library tab, tap Import and select the .llbook file. The book will be added to the shelf and available to read immediately.
